Ion exchange is an exchange process between two electrolytes. It can be a process of purification, separation and decontamination of aqueous solutions. For this process, mainly ion exchange resins or zeolites are used, which are primarily positively or negatively charged.
Due to requirement of further reducing nitrogen discharge from wastewater treatment plants, new processes are being developed that minimize the formation of N2O. Suspended Ion Exchange (SIX®) is a process that was developed and tested aiming at DOC removal from surface water. Lately, this process is being investigated for ammonium (NH4+) removal, as an alternative to the conventional nitrification-denitrification process. However, more research is required to identify the feasibility of the process for ammonium removal.
Your goal
The objective is to investigate the NH4+ removal in a SIX® system and optimize its performance.
What will you be doing? We have listed it for you:
- Conduct laboratory experiments at different operational settings and configurations.
- Perform data analysis of the experimental results.
Who are you?
- Enrolled in a Dutch BSc or MSc Chemical, (Bio)Process or Environmental Engineering.
- Flexibility and indepence.
- Curious and analytical.
- Professional command of the English language in words and writing. Command of the Dutch language is desirable, but not required.
- Minimum 4 months internship.

As an intern from the Technology & Innovation department, you will take on challenging and important projects along with Process Design Engineers and R&D engineers. You will run a project with your supervisor and a larger team located in Doetinchem and/or other locations (if applicable).
