Automation Engineer

Summary
The Automation Engineer designs, develops, and optimizes control and automation systems for water and wastewater treatment, with a focus on PLC, SCADA, and digital technologies. The role involves coordinating electrical, instrumentation, and automation activities, providing technical support, and contributing across the full project lifecycle—from concept and tender to commissioning and ongoing support. Working with multidisciplinary teams, the engineer ensures safe, efficient, and sustainable operations through automation and digitalization, while maintaining a forward-thinking approach and commitment to continuous improvement and environmental responsibility.
Report to: Chief Operating Office (COO)
Location: Office‑based in Turku, Finland, with frequent travel required for site commissioning, technical support, and training. Occasional international travel may be required.
Key Job Responsibilities:
Design & Automation Systems Development
Design, program, and test PLC, SCADA, and HMI systems for water and wastewater treatment applications.
Develop control logic, process sequences, and human-machine interfaces using industrial automation platforms.
Ensure systems are scalable, modular (standardize blocks), and aligned with digital transformation and sustainability goals.
Integration & Implementation
Collaborate with process, mechanical, and electrical teams to integrate automation with plant operations.
Contribute to P&IDs, process control philosophy, control narratives, I/O lists, and technical specifications.
Lead/support Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), and commissioning activities.
Digitalization & Smart Water Solutions
Integrate IoT devices, edge computing, and remote monitoring tools to enable smart operations and predictive maintenance.
Support implementation of digital twins and data analytics tools for operational optimization.
Ensure data integrity and real-time system performance through robust connectivity and automation infrastructure.
Compliance, Safety & Cybersecurity
Ensure compliance with relevant standards (e.g., ISO, ISA).
Implement OT cybersecurity best practices to protect critical infrastructure.
Conduct risk assessments and support process safety requirements.
Support, Documentation & Knowledge Transfer
Provide technical support and training to internal teams and customers.
Develop and maintain documentation (manuals, backups, troubleshooting guides).
Serve as a technical reference for automation and control systems during and after projects.
Performs other duties of similar nature and level as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Automation, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or equivalent.
Minimum 2 years’ experience in automation engineering, ideally in water, wastewater, chemical, or process industries.
Strong PLC/SCADA programming skills and knowledge of industrial communication protocols (e.g. Modbus, OPC UA).
Knowledge of process instrumentation, motor control, and system integration.
Familiarity with digitalization concepts (digital twins, remote monitoring, data-driven optimization).
Awareness of OT cybersecurity and relevant safety standards.
Fluent English required; advanced Finnish preferred.
Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills in international, multidisciplinary teams.
